A neon green, 4-foot high mo-hawk was hard to miss in the 80's. These punk hairstyles such as the mo-hawk were usually found only in the punk community during the 1980s. Today, punk hairstyles can be seen just about everywhere including on the catwalks of high-end fashion. For example, faux-hawks once popularized by all night ravers are now creeping into the style of straight laced bookworms.

Characterized by contradiction and a once a trademark of an underground culture, punk hairstyles have increasingly becoming mainstream. The two most popular punk hairstyles are spiked hair combined with straight hair and bright colors combined with dark hair.

The contradictions demonstrated within punk hairstyles are rooted in their intent to shock and dismay any onlooker. The basic characteristic of a punk hairstyle is when the hair is molded into spikes. The spiked hair found in punk hairstyles is expressed in many different ways. The most popular spiked hairstyle is the mo-hawk. A mo-hawk is characterized by both sides of the head being completely shaved with a wide strip of hair down the middle of the head. This strip of hair may become spiked when properly styled and formed. Another popular style for spiked hair is liberty spikes. This spiked hairstyle is characterized by large upright spikes of hair being formed randomly around the head. In true punk style, both the mo-hawk and liberty spikes cannot be formed with usual hair styling products. In order to form the most gravity defying punk hairstyles, abnormal products like Elmer's glue, egg whites, and aqua net hair spray are used.

Not only do punk hairstyles feature spiked hair, but also straight hair. In fact, straight hair combined with spiked hair is popular in later punk hairstyles.

Emo hair has become increasingly popular in recent years. Generally accepted as an offshoot of the basic punk hairstyles, an emo hairstyle includes a combination of straight and spiked hair with dark colors. While punk hairstyles tended to rebel against the norm, the emo style tends to rebel within society's acceptable boundaries. Emo hair can be seen all over the TV, in magazines and seen rampant at concerts. Most emo hairstyles are characterized by extremely straight hair with long bangs and short hair in the back. The bangs are usually swept to the side or cut in an asymmetrical style. Dark hair is a staple of this hairstyle, but lately it has taken a twist. It's now fashionable to add large streaks or chunks of bright punk hair colors, defined as alarmingly bright colors meant to shock people. These hair colors have become so popular in the last few years that many dye companies have been created to meet the demand. Dyes brands that feature bright punk hair colors include Manic Panic and Special Effects. Some of the most popular colors are midnight blue and atomic pink.

Punk hairstyles have adapted over the past two decades. What began in the 80s as rash, brightly colored, in-your-face styles have now transformed into controlled, bleak emo hair styles. Although the choices of punk hairstyles will continue to grow, the old school 80s spiked hair and bright colors will remain a clear following of punk enthusiasts for many years to come.
