Punk clothing has been a trend for decades. People use it to make a statement about their values, their opinions on life, or their likes and dislikes. Punk fashion's roots come from a music culture that dates back to the late 1970s. It has since morphed into something different and popular, including gothic punk and emo. With all of these styles of punk clothing, there are specific elements that make them what they are.

Punk is a lot about the music culture. Many punk bands sung about injustice in the government or about how they were misunderstood. A lot of punks also endorsed anarchy, a land without government control. Although most punks said they supported anarchy, few actually wanted it to happen. Since punk music and culture was a lot about go against popular society, it quickly came into favor with younger generations that felt they weren't being represented. They then used punk clothing to show that they supported this new way of life.

Punk rock clothes became popular in the 1980s. There were scores of teenagers sporting the 1980 punk clothes with zippers, spikes, and safety pins. Even though punk clothing has changed since the 1980s, it is still reminiscent of how it was back then. There are very specific ways that punk clothing looks from the pants, to the shirts, and even to the shoes.

The style of pants is very specific when it comes to punk clothing. Most of the pants are very tight, usually made of jean or slack material, and tend to taper at the ankle. Punk pants are usually darkly colored black, grey or dark blue. Another popular punk clothing trend is to have plaid printed pants. A major color theme to punk fashion is red and black, so red and black plaid pants are a good choice.

In the same vein of punk pants, punk shirts are usually very tight. Most of the t-shirts depict some popular punk band logo. Since punk has such a history, it's popular to have shirts with older bands on them such as the Ramones or the Clash. This gives respect the origins of punk culture.

Punk clothing is a lot about the accessories. It isn't enough to wear tight pants and shirts, but accessories should also be utilized in order to achieve the right look. Metal is a huge part of the fashion. Strategically placed safety pins along a collar can add a great effect. Studded leather belts are a staple in punk fashion. As for shoes, Converse All-Stars are the right choice. Although Converse comes in a lot of colors, black best represents the punk ideals.

Punk clothing isn't limited to just men. Women wear a lot of the same fashions as men do. Women also have the benefit of punk-style dresses and skirts. A lot of the girly punk clothing involves red and black plaid along with some amount of metal accessories, like studs or zippers.

One of the main offshoots of the punk clothing trend is the gothic variety. Gothic punk clothing is very similar, although more often consists of all black. Also, the t-shirt designs usually sport some time of morbid image such as a skull or gravestone. Gothic style punk clothing also has much wider pants, often the widest of any other fashion trend.

Emo clothing is another incarnation of the punk trend. Emo is a slang term for someone who is emotional or depressed. This is often reflected in black clothing. This trend also changes things up by adding a bit more color to the clothes. Emo fashion is pretty strict on the tight pants rule. One of the most distinguishing features of emo fashion isn't the clothing, but the hair style. Emo boys tend to have hair that's several inches long in the front and shorter in the back or sides. They then let their hair hang over their eyes, as if they're hiding from the world.

There are a lot of different ways to dress in punk clothing. By following the general rules of slim fitting pants and black or plaid patterns, it's easy to dress as a real punk. Punk clothing allows the wearer to express themselves in a very fashionable and trendy way.
